Heavy Civil Construction Ramps Up on the 24-Mile Blue Line BRT Corridor

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana — Transforming east-west transit across Marion County, IndyGo and regional utility partners escalated heavy civil infrastructure work in mid-October 2026 along the corridor of the future 24-mile Blue Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system. Spanning historic Washington Street (U.S. 40) from Indianapolis International Airport through Downtown Indianapolis to Cumberland, construction crews achieved key milestones on subterranean utility relocations and stormwater culvert reconstruction.

To accommodate deep storm and sanitary sewer installations managed alongside Citizens Energy Group, westbound lanes between Rockville Road and Belmont Avenue underwent planned detours, while eastbound traffic remained active. When completed in 2028, the Blue Line will feature dedicated transit lanes, center-island boarding platforms, and emergency preemption signaling.

Purple Line Marks Sustained Ridership Expansion Along 38th Street Corridor

The Blue Line ramp-up builds upon strong community momentum from the operational 15.2-mile Purple Line, which connects the downtown Julia M. Carson Transit Center to the City of Lawrence along 38th Street and Post Road. Transit managers reported that the zero-emission electric bus rapid transit line has established itself as one of the transit agency’s top ridership performers, offering reliable 15-minute headways that drastically reduce commuter travel times for local workers and hospital employees.

To further enhance network synergy, IndyGo implemented routine systemwide route adjustments in mid-October, refining local bus schedules to create seamless timed transfers with Purple and Red Line rapid corridors.

City-County Council Oversees Infrastructure Investments and Multimodal Safety

Inside the City-County Building, lawmakers reviewed ongoing capital allocations supporting rapid transit safety enhancements. Project delivery teams completed upgraded ADA-accessible sidewalk ramps, pedestrian refuge islands, and high-visibility traffic signals, delivering comprehensive streetscape improvements that enhance neighborhood safety across Indianapolis.
