Charlotte Douglas Airport Unveils $2.1 Billion CLT Beyond Expansion with Concourse C Addition and Passenger Tunnel
Aviation Department Presents Historic Capital Modernization Package to City Council
CHARLOTTE, North Carolina — Positioning the region's primary economic engine for long-term passenger growth, Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) leadership officially unveiled a comprehensive $2.1 billion capital development blueprint titled 'CLT Beyond' during the Charlotte City Council meeting on October 12, 2026. Negotiated alongside a landmark Airline Use and Lease Agreement (AULA) with major carriers including American, Delta, United, Southwest, and Frontier, the investment represents the largest single facility enhancement package in airport history.
Aviation Director Haley Gentry presented the master plan to council members, outlining critical infrastructure investments engineered to support surging international connections and high-volume hub operations ahead of the planned commissioning of the airport’s fourth parallel runway in autumn 2027.
Concourse C Expansion and Subterranean Pedestrian Tunnel Headline Upgrades
The centerpiece of the CLT Beyond initiative includes a major expansion of Concourse C, delivering newly engineered boarding gates, spacious gate lounges, and advanced concessions designed to accommodate widebody and long-haul domestic airliners. To streamline concourse transfers, the project will construct a climate-controlled subterranean passenger tunnel linking the central terminal lobby directly to the expanded concourse footprint.
The capital program also allocates substantial resources to modernize the international arrivals facility, expand customs processing checkpoints, and rebuild core electrical sub-stations to guarantee operational resilience during severe weather events.
Council Advances Regional Transportation and Energy Zoning Reviews
Following the airport presentation, City Council committees continued work on local development frameworks, evaluating zoning safeguards for proposed data center facilities while reviewing community feedback on planned transit alignments connecting Uptown with western Mecklenburg County.
