Île-de-France Mobilités and RATP Deliver Landmark Grand Paris Express Line 14 Extension from Saint-Denis Pleyel to Orly Airport
The North-South Rapid Transit Backbone for Greater Paris and Île-de-France
PARIS, France — In an extraordinary engineering and operational milestone for European metropolitan transit, Île-de-France Mobilités and the RATP have officially commissioned the monumental north and south extensions of Paris Metro Line 14. Serving as the foundational operational backbone of the landmark Grand Paris Express megaproject, the fully automated rapid transit line now traverses the French capital region from the iconic new Saint-Denis Pleyel multimodal mega-hub in the north to Paris-Orly Airport in the south, completely transforming cross-regional mobility across the Île-de-France.
The project represents the largest expansion of the Paris subway system since the mid-20th century, doubling the length of Line 14 to over 53 kilometres across 21 passenger stations. By creating an uninterrupted, high-capacity underground transit corridor that bypasses congested highway rings and surface rail choke points, Line 14 connects major economic clusters, universities, research centers, and international air gateways directly to central Paris.
Connecting Two Strategic Economic Poles in Just 40 Minutes Across 21 Stations
The extension adds eight newly constructed, architecturally modern stations to Line 14: Saint-Denis Pleyel, Maison-Blanche, Hôpital Bicêtre, Villejuif–Gustave Roussy, L'Haÿ-les-Roses, Chevilly-Larue, Thiais–Orly, and Aéroport d'Orly. Commuters can now complete the entire journey from Saint-Denis Pleyel to Orly Airport in approximately 40 minutes, providing an unprecedented rapid link between northern industrial and creative hubs and the southern international aviation terminal.
Crucially, travelers departing central Paris at Châtelet or Gare de Lyon can now reach Paris-Orly Airport in just 25 minutes, eliminating reliance on highway-bound express buses or multi-transfer commuter rail connections. The stations feature soaring natural lightwells, step-free accessibility with dual high-speed elevators, intuitive multilingual digital displays, and commissioned architectural installations designed by prominent French and international artists.
Eight-Car Driverless Alstom MP14 Fleet with 85-Second Operating Headways
Operations across Line 14 are powered exclusively by a next-generation fleet of 72 fully automated Alstom MP14 rubber-tyred metro trainsets. Measuring 120 metres in length across eight continuously connected walkthrough carriages, each trainset accommodates more than 1,000 passengers. The rubber-tyred bogies deliver whisper-quiet ride quality and exceptional acceleration, while regenerative electric braking reduces fleet energy consumption by 20 percent compared to legacy rolling stock.
Underpinned by Siemens Trainguard Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) and advanced GoA4 driverless automation, Line 14 achieves an astonishing 85-second headway during morning and evening rush hours. Station platforms are equipped with full-height automated glass screen doors that synchronize to the millisecond with train doors, preventing track incursions, optimizing climate efficiency, and enabling the system to reliably transport upwards of one million passengers per day.
An Indispensable Strategic Foundation for Greater Paris Urban Renewal
Regional transit authorities underscored that Line 14 functions as the critical linchpin for the entire Grand Paris Express network, designed to provide direct platform-to-platform interchanges with upcoming driverless orbital lines: Line 15, Line 16, Line 17, and Line 18. The landmark Saint-Denis Pleyel station alone will handle over 250,000 daily commuters once all intersecting lines enter service.
By anchoring zero-emission mass transit connectivity for major international sporting, business, and cultural events, and catalyzing thousands of new affordable housing units and commercial innovation districts along its route, the expanded Line 14 cements Île-de-France's position as a global leader in sustainable, high-capacity urban mobility.
