Paris Metro Line 14 Becomes Busiest Rail Arterial in Île-de-France Surpassing 820,000 Daily Riders Across Extended Corridor
Grand Paris Express Flagship Surpasses All Regional Ridership Records
PARIS, Ile-de-France — In a historic achievement for European mass transit, Paris Metro Line 14 has officially become the busiest and highest-volume rapid transit line in the entire Île-de-France network. Following the full commissioning of its northern and southern extensions under the landmark Grand Paris Express project, operator RATP and regional transport authority Île-de-France Mobilités confirmed that Line 14 now carries more than 820,000 passengers every weekday, surpassing Line 1 to claim the top transit ranking in the French capital.
The surging ridership represents a remarkable 45 percent increase in passenger volume compared to pre-extension levels. With continuous passenger growth and upcoming interchanges with future orbital lines, transit planners project daily ridership to surpass one million passengers by 2026, establishing Line 14 as one of the world's most productive driverless metro corridors.
Spanning 30 Kilometres from Saint-Denis Pleyel to Paris-Orly Airport
The transformed Line 14 now stretches across 30 kilometres of continuous subterranean track and 21 world-class stations, serving as the critical north-south backbone uniting the northern and southern halves of the Paris metropolitan area. Commuters can now travel from the architectural cathedral station of Saint-Denis Pleyel in the north, through the heart of central Paris (including Châtelet and Gare de Lyon), and directly to Aéroport d’Orly in just 40 minutes.
The extension features stunning new architecturally celebrated underground stations, including Maison Blanche, Hôpital Bicêtre, L’Haÿ-les-Roses, Chevilly-Larue, Thiais-Orly, and the newly integrated cancer research transit hub at Villejuif – Gustave Roussy. Each station provides step-free elevator access, full-height automated glass platform screen doors, natural lighting wells, and wide escalators capable of managing surging passenger crowds.
High-Capacity Automated Alstom MP14 Trainsets Operating at 85-Second Headways
To support the passenger surge, Line 14 operates an expanded fleet of 72 eight-car Alstom MP14 rubber-tyred automated trainsets. Measuring 120 metres in length, the walk-through trains offer 20 percent more passenger capacity than legacy six-car rolling stock, equipped with ergonomic seating, energy-efficient regenerative braking that cuts traction power consumption by 17 percent, and dynamic digital route displays that update connecting train and flight schedules in real time.
Governed by advanced Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) automation under Grade of Automation 4 (GoA4), trains run seamlessly with ultra-precise headway frequencies as tight as 85 seconds during peak rush hour, maximizing line throughput while maintaining uncompromising safety standards across the subterranean network.
Unlocking Multimodal Integration and Regional Decarbonization
President of Île-de-France Mobilités Valérie Pécresse and RATP leadership underscored that Line 14 serves as the foundational spine of the broader Grand Paris Express transit network. Offering direct interchanges with 10 metro lines, 5 RER commuter rail lines, and 3 Transilien routes, the electrified arterial removes more than 40,000 private vehicle trips from regional highways every single day, drastically cutting carbon emissions and charting the future of sustainable metropolitan mobility.
