Prince Albert II Inaugurates Landmark 1,800-Space Parking des Salines and Monumental Galerie des Salines Pedestrian Link in Monaco
A Strategic Multimodal Gateway at the Western Entrance of the Principality
JARDIN EXOTIQUE, Monaco — In a monumental stride for Monaco’s national Mobility Plan and carbon neutrality targets, H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco, accompanied by Minister of State Didier Guillaume and Monegasque civic dignitaries, has officially inaugurated the state-of-the-art Parking des Salines and its companion Galerie des Salines pedestrian link. Located strategically at the western gateway to Monaco along Boulevard du Jardin Exotique, the ambitious civil engineering complex establishes a premier park-and-ride facility engineered to intercept commuter vehicle flows from neighboring French communities, dramatically curbing vehicular congestion across central Monegasque avenues.
The strategic deployment of the Salines complex addresses the Principality's daily mobility influx, where over 50,000 cross-border commuters enter Monaco each morning. By offering attractive long-term parking subscriptions paired with frictionless public transport transfers, the facility diverts up to 2,000 private vehicles daily from central city streets, directly contributing to the Principality's binding commitment to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
Fifteen Levels of Eco-Friendly Infrastructure with 1,790 Spaces and 100 EV Chargers
Spanning 15 subterranean and terraced structural levels, the monumental facility accommodates 1,790 light vehicles, 100 dedicated motorcycle bays, 20 spaces reserved for regional and international touring coaches, and a modern automated vehicle wash center. Engineered with environmental sustainability at its core, the facility incorporates 100 Monaco ON electric vehicle charging stations, delivering high-speed, subsidized recharging to support the Principality’s transition toward clean e-mobility.
For micro-mobility enthusiasts, the hub features two dedicated MonaBike electric bicycle sharing stations, providing commuters with immediate access to power-assisted cycling along designated downhill and coastal bike corridors into Fontvieille and Port Hercule.
The Monumental Galerie des Salines and Restored Roger Capron Heritage Artwork
To provide step-free, pleasant pedestrian connectivity from the high-altitude western entrance down to the Principality’s urban core, engineers completed the spectacular Galerie des Salines. The civil structure conquers a steep 120-metre cliffside altitude differential between the Jardin Exotique district and Fontvieille through a sophisticated transit system comprising high-speed public elevators, a 110-metre underground walkway, and an elegant 190-metre aerial footbridge spanning the valley.
This active mobility corridor grants direct, effortless access to the Princess Grace Hospital Centre (CHPG) and the bustling commercial district of Fontvieille. Furthermore, the gallery serves as an open-air cultural showcase, featuring the permanent installation of magnificent restored ceramic murals crafted by iconic French artist Roger Capron, originally preserved from the former Larvotto seaside promenade and carefully restored by Monaco's cultural heritage authorities.
Dedicated Express Electric Shuttle Lines X1 and X2 Powering Urban Mobility
Complementing the pedestrian gallery, the Compagnie des Autobus de Monaco (CAM) has inaugurated two dedicated express electric shuttle bus routes serving the Salines complex: Line X1, providing high-frequency direct transit to Place d'Armes and Fontvieille in under ten minutes, and Line X2, linking commuters directly to Monte-Carlo Casino and Boulevard des Moulins at ten-minute peak intervals.
Equipped with zero-emission electric buses operating in dedicated transit priority lanes, the Salines shuttles provide commuters with a swift, comfortable, and stress-free journey. By harmonizing cutting-edge civil infrastructure, clean electric transit, and public art preservation, the Parking and Galerie des Salines project stands as a prime exemplar of Prince Albert II’s vision for sustainable, high-quality Mediterranean urban living.
