Translink Delivers £340 Million Belfast Grand Central Station Creating Ireland’s Largest Integrated Rail and Bus Interchange
Generational Transformation for Northern Ireland Public Transportation
BELFAST, Northern Ireland — In the most significant civil infrastructure achievement in Northern Ireland in more than a generation, transport authority Translink and the Department for Infrastructure (DfI) have achieved full operational service across the completed £340 million Belfast Grand Central Station. Replacing the aging Europa Buscentre and the decommissioned Great Victoria Street rail terminal, the state-of-the-art facility establishes the single largest integrated passenger transport interchange on the island of Ireland, consolidating regional rail, national bus networks, and international coach links beneath a single soaring glass-and-timber concourse.
Spanning an expansive eight-hectare site in central Belfast, the world-class gateway is engineered to handle up to 20 million passenger journeys annually. Phased commissioning began with the successful transfer of provincial and cross-border bus services, followed by the comprehensive reopening of the Belfast-to-Lisburn rail line and the introduction of full rail timetable operations, creating a unified multimodal hub for Northern Ireland's capital.
Expanded Rail Capacity and the Cross-Border Enterprise Flagship Service
A central engineering feat of Belfast Grand Central Station is its dramatic expansion of railway capacity, doubling previous track availability with eight full-length passenger platforms. The station serves as the northern terminus for the flagship Enterprise express service linking Belfast directly to Dublin Connolly Station, operated in cross-border partnership between NI Railways and Iarnród Éireann.
Backed by funding from the European Union’s Peace Plus programme and the UK Department for Infrastructure, the modernized rail tracks and high-capacity digital signaling systems accommodate frequent hourly departures between Belfast and Dublin. The upgraded platforms also host high-frequency suburban and regional trains on the Bangor, Larne, and Derry~Londonderry routes, featuring step-free level boarding access, automated ticket barriers, and dynamic digital platform displays.
Multi-Modal Integration with 26 Coach Stands and Belfast Glider Rapid Transit
On the bus side of the terminal, the interchange boasts 26 dedicated bus and coach stands, dramatically streamlining regional express coaches, airport shuttles to George Best Belfast City Airport and Belfast International Airport, and cross-channel services. The facility connects directly to Translink’s zero-emission electric Metro bus fleet and prepares for future connectivity with the expanding Belfast Rapid Transit (Glider) network.
Passenger amenities inside the airy, naturally illuminated main concourse include modern retail and café units, accessible Changing Places sensory restrooms, free high-speed public Wi-Fi, executive business waiting lounges, and secure indoor cycle storage equipped with repair stations. The building achieved BREEAM “Excellent” sustainability accreditation through extensive rooftop solar photovoltaic installations, rainwater harvesting systems, and low-energy heat pump heating.
Anchoring the Weavers Cross Regeneration District and Economic Growth
Northern Ireland Infrastructure Ministers and civic leaders highlighted that Belfast Grand Central Station acts as the economic catalyst for the wider Weavers Cross neighborhood redevelopment. This ambitious, multi-decade urban regeneration masterplan will transform 1.3 million square feet of adjacent brownfield rail lands into Grade-A commercial office space, vibrant civic squares, independent retail boutiques, and hundreds of residential homes.
By positioning public transit at the core of urban life, the hub delivers on Northern Ireland’s statutory decarbonization targets, encouraging hundreds of thousands of commuters each month to leave private cars behind, reduce urban congestion along the Westlink corridor, and forge stronger economic and social ties between Belfast and regional towns across the UK and the Republic of Ireland.
