Merseyrail Expands Pioneering £500 Million Class 777 Battery-Electric Train Fleet and Network Reach Across Liverpool City Region
UK-First Battery-Electric Passenger Rail Network in the Liverpool City Region
LIVERPOOL, Merseyside — In an internationally recognized technological milestone for British public transportation, Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram and the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority have accelerated the full network deployment of their groundbreaking £500 million fleet of 53 Class 777 trains. Owned directly by the public and built by Swiss rail manufacturer Stadler, the state-of-the-art fleet features cutting-edge on-board lithium-ion battery technology, allowing electric passenger services to operate far beyond the traditional 750V DC electrified third-rail network.
This innovation establishes the United Kingdom’s first regular scheduled passenger rail service powered by battery traction technology. By dismantling the technical and financial hurdles of full track electrification, the battery-electric units allow the Merseyrail commuter network to extend rapid passenger service into newly built suburban stations and underserved regional communities without the multi-million-pound capital expense of extending electrified third-rail infrastructure.
Unlocking New Communities: The £80 Million Headbolt Lane Station Interchange
The operational triumph of the battery-powered fleet is showcased by the opening of the landmark £80 million Headbolt Lane station in Kirkby. Located past the northern terminus of the electrified Merseyrail Northern Line, the station was engineered specifically for battery-electric operation. Trains transition seamlessly on the fly from third-rail power to internal battery propulsion, running emission-free on non-electrified trackage into Headbolt Lane before recharging automatically when returning to third-rail territory.
The modern multi-modal transport hub features high-capacity step-free passenger boarding platforms, modern bus waiting hubs, secure cycle parking enclosures, and an 80-space commuter park-and-ride facility equipped with electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. The new service provides more than 20,000 residents in Northwood and Tower Hill with direct, one-seat rail connections to central Liverpool in under 30 minutes, restoring passenger rail access that had been severed for more than four decades.
State-of-the-Art Passenger Features and Universal Level-Boarding Step Mechanism
The Class 777 trains represent a generational upgrade from Merseyrail’s legacy 1970s rolling stock. A defining engineering achievement is the train’s automated sliding step technology. Integrated into every doorway, the precision-engineered step deploys outward to meet the platform edge the instant the train stops, completely closing the gap between carriage and platform to deliver 100% unassisted, step-free boarding for wheelchair users, cyclists, and passengers with prams.
The open-plan, walk-through carriage configuration expands passenger capacity by 50 percent, while wide aisles, intelligent climate-controlled air conditioning, dynamic digital passenger information displays, USB charging ports at every seat, and continuous high-definition CCTV surveillance ensure exceptional commuter comfort, safety, and personal security across both the Northern and Wirral Lines.
Driving Regional Decarbonization and Future Network Expansions
The Liverpool City Region Combined Authority affirmed that the proven battery-electric technology provides an affordable blueprint for future network expansions. Planners are currently evaluating battery-powered Merseyrail extensions toward Skelmersdale, Wrexham, and the Baltic Triangle creative quarter, alongside direct rail links into Cheshire and Lancashire.
By replacing diesel-powered shuttle buses, encouraging mass transit adoption, and harvesting energy through advanced regenerative braking systems, the Class 777 fleet prevents thousands of metric tons of carbon emissions annually, cementing Liverpool’s position as a national leader in modern, green public mobility.
