Transforming the Gateway to Yorkshire’s Busiest Rail Interchange

LEEDS, West Yorkshire — In a benchmark achievement for urban regeneration and public transit accessibility, Leeds City Council, the West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA), and Network Rail have commenced the final phased opening of the landmark £46.1 million Leeds Station Sustainable Travel Gateway. The transformative civil works have completely pedestrianized New Station Street, converting the historically vehicle-choked station forecourt into a world-class, pedestrian-first civic boulevard welcoming more than 30 million passengers annually.

As Yorkshire’s busiest railway interchange and one of the pivotal transit hubs in the North of England, Leeds Station previously suffered from heavy pedestrian and vehicle conflicts outside the main concourse. The new gateway layout completely separates private traffic, freight servicing, and public transit, creating a grand, open-air pedestrian promenade flanked by architectural granite paving, modern street lighting, and native floral planters.

Critical Step-Free Accessibility with High-Capacity Passenger Lifts

A central pillar of the engineering transformation is the introduction of two brand-new, high-capacity external passenger lifts connecting Bishopgate Street directly to the elevated rail concourse on New Station Street. Providing essential step-free accessibility, the panoramic glass lifts eliminate historical barriers for wheelchair users, families with pushchairs, and passengers carrying heavy luggage.

Complementing the lifts, a grand ceremonial staircase featuring 68 granite steps and integrated tactile handrails offers an expansive, attractive pedestrian route linking the station concourse with the bustling southern and western commercial districts of central Leeds. For active travelers, a multi-storey dedicated cycle hub with high-capacity bike lifts and secure parking for hundreds of cycles connects seamlessly to the city’s segregated cycle superhighways.

Heavy Structural Reinforcement of Victorian Mill Goit Arches

Delivered under complex working conditions within an active railway environment, civil engineering teams completed vital structural reinforcement and waterproofing of the historic Victorian brick arches and the subterranean Mill Goit waterway flowing beneath New Station Street. These hidden civil interventions ensure the structural integrity of the century-old station deck for decades into the future.

Simultaneously, the station's primary taxi rank has been permanently relocated from Princes Square to an optimized, high-capacity transit interchange facility on Bishopgate Street. Designed with wide passenger waiting shelters, real-time dispatch screens, and electric vehicle charging bays, the relocated rank optimizes passenger flow while reducing vehicle idling times across city-centre roads.

Anchoring Leeds’ Net-Zero Urban Mobility Vision

Mayor of West Yorkshire Tracy Brabin and Leeds City Council leaders underscored that the Sustainable Travel Gateway forms a foundational component of the region’s long-term transport strategy and upcoming West Yorkshire Mass Transit network. By removing vehicles from the station entrance and prioritizing active, step-free travel, the project establishes a vibrant, zero-carbon arrival experience that reinforces Leeds’ status as a leading European hub for business, education, and innovation.
