RTD Secures $44M Clean Transit Grant as Denver Deploys $208M Affordable Housing Stability Plan
$44 Million State Clean Transit Grant Bolsters High-Frequency RTD Corridors
DENVER, Colorado — Expanding clean regional transit options and boosting passenger capacity between major employment hubs, the Regional Transportation District (RTD) secured a major $44 million capital grant from the Colorado Clean Transit Enterprise in October 2026. The transformative funding is slated to add nearly 4 million annual transit rides across the metropolitan area beginning in 2027.
The grant will finance increased service frequencies on the high-demand Flatiron Flyer rapid bus corridor linking Denver to Boulder, while establishing expanded express routes directly connecting Boulder and regional park-and-rides to Denver International Airport (DEN). Transit planners underscored that high-frequency airport connectivity reduces highway congestion on Interstate 70 and Pena Boulevard while slashing regional carbon emissions.
RTD Launches 'First Mile Free' Micro-Mobility Pilot at Light Rail Stations
Further improving seamless last-mile connections, RTD launched its 'First Mile Free' micro-mobility pilot program on October 1, 2026. Under the two-year initiative, commuters ending their trips at the University of Denver Station (E and H Lines) or Knox Station (W Line) receive fully subsidized e-scooter and e-bike rides through regional provider partnerships, removing barriers to car-free transit commutes.
The pilot forms a core component of RTD’s 2021–2026 Strategic Plan, utilizing smart mobility technology and fare incentives to boost light rail ridership across diverse neighborhood corridors without requiring broad fare increases.
Department of Housing Stability Deploys $208 Million to Deliver 1,475 Affordable Homes
In civic housing revitalization, the Denver Department of Housing Stability (HOST) reported significant progress on its $208 million annual housing investment plan. Under the restructured 'All In Mile High' framework, the city is transitioning unsheltered residents from emergency hotel shelters into permanent supportive housing via an integrated municipal housing command center.
HOST officials confirmed the city is on track to complete 575 newly constructed income-restricted apartments and preserve 900 affordable homes throughout 2026, delivering long-term stability for working families, veterans, and individuals exiting homelessness.
Civic and transit leaders praised Denver's coordinated momentum across clean transit expansion, first-mile mobility innovations, and permanent housing solutions, keeping the Mile High City vibrant and inclusive.
