Pioneering Battery-Electric Commuter Rail Across the Liverpool City Region

LIVERPOOL, Merseyside — In a benchmark achievement for British sustainable transport, the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority and regional passenger operator Merseyrail have completed the network-wide introduction of their £500 million fleet of 53 custom-built Stadler Class 777 electric trainsets. Featuring cutting-edge battery-electric multiple unit (BEMU) technology, the fleet has successfully expanded passenger service beyond the historic electrified third-rail boundary, powering zero-emission commuter links to the newly opened Headbolt Lane station in Kirkby.

The battery-powered units represent the UK’s first fleet of battery-electric passenger trains in scheduled regional service. Drawing electricity from the third-rail network during standard urban running, the trains recharge their advanced onboard lithium-ion traction batteries seamlessly before disconnecting overhead and ground shoes to travel along non-electrified track branches at speeds up to 75 mph.

Intelligent Sliding Step Technology and Level Boarding Innovation

Engineered by Swiss manufacturer Stadler Rail, the Class 777 trainsets establish a new national standard for passenger accessibility. Each four-car trainset incorporates pioneering intelligent sliding step technology that automatically deploys from every doorway to meet platform edges, providing completely unassisted, step-free level boarding for wheelchair users, cyclists, and parents with prams across the entire 75-mile suburban rail network.

Commuters benefit from spacious open-gangway walk-through carriages, full climate conditioning, low-energy LED ambient illumination, USB fast-charging points at every seat, and high-resolution digital passenger information screens that display real-time connecting bus and ferry departures.

Construction Advances on the Landmark Liverpool Baltic Station

Building upon the fleet rollout, civil engineering teams are advancing construction on the brand-new Liverpool Baltic railway station along the Merseyrail Northern Line. Situated in the heart of Liverpool's bustling Baltic Triangle—famed for its digital tech startups, creative hubs, and hospitality venues—the multi-million-pound station will restore passenger rail service to the former St James station site for the first time in over a century.

The project features fully accessible surface concourses, dual sunken platforms equipped with protective glass canopies, and direct cycling and walking linkages into the waterfront and city centre. Scheduled to welcome passengers by late 2025 and ramp up high-frequency services into 2026, the station is projected to generate millions of pounds in localized economic regeneration.

Realizing Mayor Steve Rotheram's 'Merseyrail for All' Blueprint

Liverpool City Region Mayor Steve Rotheram underscored that the battery-electric fleet and new station developments represent the linchpins of the ambitious 'Merseyrail for All' strategy. By extending clean, reliable rail links to previously underserved districts such as Skelmersdale, Woodchurch, and Daresbury without the prohibitive costs of heavy electrification infrastructure, Merseyside is establishing a fully integrated, London-style public transit network committed to achieving net-zero carbon mobility.
