The decision by senior ministers authorizes Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) and the National Transport Authority (NTA) to initiate formal procurement competitions to select international civil engineering consortia and rolling stock manufacturers to construct and operate Ireland's first fully automated, driverless subterranean railway.

Spanning 18.8 kilometres across North Dublin and the central core, MetroLink will serve 16 state-of-the-art stations, originating in the northern suburb of Swords Estate, tunneling beneath Dublin Airport, and traversing major civic nodes including Ballymun, Glasnevin, the Mater Hospital, and O’Connell Street before terminating at Charlemont south of the Grand Canal.

Approximately 75% of the route will be situated underground in single-bore and twin-bore tunnels excavated by specialized tunnel boring machines. Once fully commissioned, the high-frequency line will carry passengers from Dublin Airport to the city centre in less than 20 minutes, with automated trainsets arriving every 90 seconds during peak commute windows.

Seamless Intermodal Transfers at Glasnevin and Central Transport Hubs

MetroLink is engineered as the backbone of the Greater Dublin Area's integrated transit network, delivering vital intermodal connections that link commuter rail, Luas trams, and bus corridors. At the new Glasnevin interchange station, MetroLink platforms will interface directly with the electrified DART+ South West and Western commuter rail corridors, enabling hundreds of thousands of commuters arriving from Maynooth and Kildare to transfer seamlessly onto driverless metro trains without entering congested surface roads.

Every underground station will feature full-height glass Platform Screen Doors (PSDs), step-free level boarding for accessibility, spacious concourses with natural light wells, and advanced digital passenger journey monitoring systems powered by high-efficiency renewable energy grids.

With an estimated central capital expenditure of €15.75 billion, MetroLink represents the largest single state infrastructure investment in the history of the Irish Republic.
