The procurement framework encompasses major multidisciplinary contracts, including the flagship M401 and M402 civil tunneling packages and the 25-year Design, Build, Finance, Operate, and Maintain (DBFOM) concession that will govern the automated driverless trainsets, computerized signaling, and long-term rail operations.

Dublin MetroLink delivers a transformational 19-kilometre, high-capacity electrified rail spine featuring 16 state-of-the-art stations stretching from Estuary in Swords southward beneath Dublin Airport, through Ballymun, Glasnevin, the city centre at O'Connell Street and Trinity, and terminating at Charlemont. Engineered as a fully automated, Grade of Automation 4 (GoA4) driverless metro system, trains will operate with 90-second peak headways, delivering an extraordinary carrying capacity of up to 20,000 passengers per hour in each direction.

The dedicated underground rail link will slash journey times between Dublin Airport and downtown O'Connell Street to a predictable 20 minutes, eliminating chronic vehicular congestion across the M1, M50, and Swords Road arterial corridors and offering arriving international visitors a world-class transit gateway.

Jacobs AECOM Appointed as Strategic Programme Delivery Partner

Synchronizing the transition from statutory planning to physical execution, transport authorities confirmed the appointment of international engineering consortium Jacobs AECOM as the integrated Programme Delivery Partner. The partnership will oversee procurement integrity, advanced geotechnical modeling, contractor governance, and environmental monitoring across the alignment.

Extensive early enabling works—including high-voltage utility diversions, deep subterranean test pits, and site preparation around Dublin Airport and Swords—are scheduled to mobilize aggressively in early 2027, clearing the path for full-scale Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) excavation in 2028.

Transforming Irish Mobility, Housing Density, and Climate Sustainability

Irish transport ministers and business leaders emphasized that MetroLink forms the indispensable anchor of the Greater Dublin Area Transport Strategy. By establishing direct multimodal interchanges with the DART coastal rail network at Glasnevin and Tara Street, as well as Luas Green and Red light rail lines, MetroLink will unlock upwards of 30,000 transit-oriented homes along the northern development corridor.
