Transport for London Awards Contract for Historic South Kensington Tube Station Transformation

LONDON, United Kingdom — Transport for London (TfL) has officially chosen infrastructure specialist Costain to lead the comprehensive design and construction overhaul of South Kensington Underground station, delivering long-awaited step-free accessibility across one of the capital's most heavily utilized cultural gateways.

South Kensington serves as the direct transit conduit to London's renowned Museum Quarter, including the Natural History Museum, the Science Museum, and the Victoria and Albert Museum. The major engineering scheme will introduce new high-capacity passenger elevators, establishing universal step-free access from street level down to the subterranean Circle, District, and Piccadilly line platforms.

Beyond accessibility improvements, the project reinstates a decommissioned eastbound platform to significantly alleviate platform crowding during peak morning commutes and high-volume tourist weekends. The works also encompass meticulous architectural conservation of the Grade II-listed Victorian shopping arcade and station facade dating back to the late 19th century.

TfL transit planners noted that the project is structured to minimize disruptions to daily passenger services while coordinating logistical access through Kensington and Chelsea municipal corridors.
