Forest Grove Quintuple Homicide Investigation Underway After Five Found Dead

Detectives say deaths at rural Forest Grove property were not believed to be random

FOREST GROVE, Oregon — Five people were found dead at a rural property in Forest Grove after deputies were called to a vehicle fire early Saturday, prompting the Washington County Sheriff's Office to open a quintuple homicide investigation. Authorities announced the case Sunday and said they do not believe the violence was random.

The property is in Forest Grove, roughly 30 miles west of downtown Portland. Responding deputies and other emergency personnel initially went to the location after receiving reports of a vehicle on fire, the sheriff's office said. Once there, they discovered the remains of five people as well as several dead domestic animals.

Authorities have not released the identities, ages or genders of the people who died. Investigators also have not said how the victims were killed, whether the vehicle fire was connected to the deaths, or what relationship, if any, the victims had to one another.

Victim identification remains a major focus

Detective Shannon Wilde told reporters Sunday afternoon that investigators were still working to identify the victims, describing the Forest Grove quintuple homicide scene as a complex and demanding investigation.

“Any time you have one person deceased, let alone five, that's a logistical challenge,” Wilde said, pointing to the size of the crime scene and the number of investigative tasks underway.

Wilde addressed questions about why the sheriff's office did not release details until Sunday afternoon, after deputies had first located the bodies Saturday. She said investigators were trying to establish the victims' identities and notify next of kin while managing an active case with numerous moving parts. Officials wanted to ensure that information was accurate before making it public, she said.

The presence of dead animals at the property adds another element to an already unusual scene, though the sheriff's office has not specified what types of animals were found or whether their deaths are being investigated as part of the homicide case.

Sheriff asks for information about property and residents

Sheriff Caprice Massey appealed for help from anyone familiar with the Forest Grove property or with people who lived there. Massey said the scene stood out even after more than two decades with the agency.

“I will say that in my 22 years here, I have not been a part of or witnessed a scene quite this complex involving this type of an investigation,” Massey said.

Investigations involving multiple deaths often require extensive forensic work, victim identification and interviews with people connected to the property before police can establish a clear timeline or determine a possible motive. In this case, detectives have so far provided no indication of a suspected motive or a possible suspect.

No arrests had been announced as of Sunday, and the sheriff's office said no one was in custody. The Forest Grove quintuple homicide investigation remains active, with detectives seeking information from anyone who knows the property or its residents.
