Englewood Shooting in Chicago Leaves 34-Year-Old Man Dead
Gunman approached SUV before firing, Chicago police say
A 34-year-old man was killed in an Englewood shooting late Saturday after a gunman approached the SUV where he was sitting and opened fire on Chicago’s South Side, police said.
The shooting occurred at about 9:16 p.m. in the 6200 block of May Street in the Englewood neighborhood, according to the Chicago Police Department. The victim was inside a gray SUV when an unidentified person approached on foot and fired several shots, police said.
The gunman then fled in an unknown direction. Police did not release a description of the shooter or say whether investigators had identified a motive.
The 34-year-old man was struck in the shoulder and abdomen, authorities said. He was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition and was later pronounced dead.
Detectives examining fatal shooting
The killing adds to the continuing challenge of gun violence investigations in Chicago neighborhoods, where detectives often rely on physical evidence, surveillance footage and witness accounts to identify shooters who flee before officers arrive. Police did not say whether any witnesses were cooperating or whether evidence had been recovered at the scene.
No other injuries were reported in connection with the shooting. The victim’s name had not been released in the information provided by police.
Area 1 detectives are investigating the fatal Englewood shooting. No arrests had been announced, and the gunman remained at large as of the latest police update.
