Police investigate fatal South Lawndale apartment stabbing

A woman was fatally stabbed late Tuesday inside a South Lawndale apartment in Chicago, and a 59-year-old man accused of attacking her was hospitalized after allegedly using the knife on himself, police said.

Chicago police officers were called about 11:35 p.m. for a report of a person stabbed in the 2500 block of South Christiana Avenue. When officers arrived, they found both the woman and the man inside the residence, according to a police report.

The woman had suffered multiple puncture wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. Her age and identity were not immediately released.

The man had also been stabbed multiple times. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in serious condition, officials said. Police said he was arrested, but no criminal charges had been announced as of the latest update because he remained hospitalized.

Investigators recovered at least one steak knife from the apartment, according to the police report. The report states that the man attacked the woman before stabbing himself.

The case is being handled by Chicago Police Department Area 4 detectives. Detectives will review physical evidence, determine the circumstances leading to the stabbing and work to identify the woman before further information is released.

The killing underscores the often rapidly evolving nature of reported domestic or interpersonal violence incidents, where responding officers must secure a scene, provide emergency aid and preserve evidence while investigators establish what happened. Police have not publicly described the relationship, if any, between the man and woman, and no motive was disclosed.

Authorities also did not say whether anyone else was inside the apartment when the stabbing occurred or whether witnesses had been interviewed. The location remained the focus of the investigation after the woman was pronounced dead.

The woman’s death remains under investigation, and the hospitalized man had not been charged as police continued their inquiry.
