Teen taken to hospital after overnight shooting on South Bensley Avenue

A 16-year-old girl was shot in the left foot early Wednesday in Chicago's South Deering neighborhood on the Far South Side, according to police. The shooting was reported at about 12:35 a.m. in the 10600 block of South Bensley Avenue.

The teenager gave officers limited information about the circumstances of the shooting, police said. Authorities did not release details on a possible shooter, a motive, or whether the girl had been the intended target.

She was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where she was listed in good condition, police said. No other injuries were reported in connection with the incident.

The case was assigned to Area 2 detectives, who are investigating. Detectives will typically review available surveillance video, interview witnesses and examine physical evidence as they work to identify those responsible.

The South Deering shooting underscores the continuing danger posed by overnight gunfire in Chicago neighborhoods, where victims and investigators can face significant challenges when few details are immediately available. Police have not said whether the girl knew the person who shot her.

Anyone with information about the shooting can contact the Chicago Police Department. As of the latest police update, no arrests had been made and the investigation remained ongoing.
