Isaac TeSlaa, an old friend and now a receiver for the Detroit Lions, witnessed Large’s struggle firsthand. During Large's recovery, TeSlaa made it a point to visit, bringing balloons to lift his friend’s spirits during a time when social gatherings were out of reach for the bedridden athlete. “That’s the time in our lives when everyone’s hanging out,” TeSlaa remarked, highlighting the emotional toll of Large's situation.

Finding a Path to College Football

Despite the setbacks, Large persevered and accepted a scholarship at Dordt University, the only school to offer him a chance to continue playing football. He excelled at the NAIA level, gaining recognition as a star player with 62 receptions for 950 yards and 12 touchdowns over three seasons. His hard work and determination caught the attention of college coaches, leading to his eventual move to the University of Iowa.

Transition to the NFL

At Iowa, Large transitioned into a fullback role before settling into a blocking-first tight end position during his sixth college season. His final season was pivotal, as Abdul Hodge, the tight ends coach, encouraged Large about his potential in the NFL. “You can make a niche for yourself if you get to the right team,” Hodge advised, which resonated with Large.

Joining the Chicago Bears

Large’s journey reached a new milestone when the Bears expressed their interest. Coach Ben Johnson envisioned a unique role for Large, despite the team drafting tight end Sam Roush in the third round.
