The National Weather Service has confirmed that six tornadoes struck the Chicago area during severe storms on Tuesday, marking a staggering 206 tornadoes reported in Illinois this year alone, surpassing the previous record of 142 set in 2024.

Tornado Touchdowns Confirmed Across Multiple Areas

Among the tornadoes confirmed, the weather service identified an EF1 tornado in Homewood, where winds ranged from 86 to 110 mph. This tornado originated near Halsted Street, between 183rd and 187th streets, causing significant damage to a strip mall and several apartment buildings before dissipating east of Illinois Route 394 south of Thornton-Lansing Road.

Another severe tornado, rated EF2 on the Enhanced Fujita scale, impacted areas from Monee to St. John, Indiana, with peak winds reaching approximately 115 mph. Out of the six confirmed tornadoes, four were classified as EF1 and one as EF0, which signifies relatively lower intensity. The Enhanced Fujita scale rates tornadoes from EF0 to EF5, with EF5 denoting the most destructive storms.
