JAKARTA, Indonesia – A fire broke out early Wednesday morning on the Putri Yasmin ferry while it was navigating the turbulent waters en route from Padang Bai port in Bali to Lembar port on the neighboring island of Lombok. The incident, which occurred around 4:15 a.m., prompted an urgent rescue mission as authorities battled against rough sea conditions that saw waves as high as 4 meters (13 feet).
As of the latest reports, rescuers have successfully saved 106 individuals from the ferry, while efforts are ongoing to locate and assist the remaining 25 passengers and crew members still on board the burning vessel. The Mataram Search and Rescue Office confirmed that personnel and vessels were deployed to the scene following an emergency report received approximately 30 minutes after the fire started.
“Our top priority is the safety of all passengers and crew members,” stated Muhammad Hariyadi, the head of the rescue office, emphasizing the challenging conditions faced by rescuers. The operation has involved not only local rescue teams but also support from Indonesian navy ships, patrol boats, and even a helicopter deployed to conduct aerial surveys of the area.
