Scottish Man Accused of Leading International Crime Gang Arrested in Bali, Set for Extradition to Spain

Steven Lyons, a 45-year-old Scottish national alleged to head an international criminal organization, was arrested by Indonesian immigration officials at Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali on Saturday after arriving from Singapore, authorities confirmed.

The arrest, which was part of a coordinated operation involving Spanish and Scottish police, was confirmed by Untung Widiyatmoko, head of Interpol Indonesia. Bali police chief Daniel Adityajaya stated that Lyons is suspected of leading a large-scale network engaged in narcotics trafficking and money laundering, using shell companies across Europe and the Middle East, including in Spain, Scotland, England, Dubai, Qatar, Bahrain, and Turkey.

Indonesian officials said Lyons was apprehended based on warrants from both the UK and Spain, where he is wanted for alleged organized crime, drug trafficking, money laundering, and for a murder that occurred in Spain in 2024. Authorities indicated he has been on Spain's wanted list for approximately two years following the murder case.

Photographs from Tuesday show Lyons in an orange prisoner's uniform being escorted by police officers in Denpasar, Bali’s capital. He is scheduled to be extradited to Spain on Wednesday, according to local officials.

Police said recent raids in Scotland and Spain, coordinated with Europol and law enforcement in Turkey, the Netherlands, and the United Arab Emirates, resulted in multiple arrests tied to Lyons' case.

Bali immigration official Bugie Kurniawan stated that Lyons arrived in Bali with two companions, who are believed to remain on the island. Spain's Interpol has identified them as cartel members, but no arrest warrants have been issued for them. The extradition process is ongoing, with Indonesian authorities coordinating with international counterparts.
