Don Nelson, the second-winningest coach in NBA history, died at the age of 86, as confirmed by his family on Sunday. Nelson, who was surrounded by loved ones at the time of his passing, was a five-time NBA champion as a player and a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

A Pioneering Coaching Career

Throughout his 31 seasons as an NBA head coach, Nelson compiled a regular-season record of 1,335 wins and 1,063 losses. He made 18 playoff appearances, finishing with a postseason record of 75-91. His coaching style, known as "Nellie Ball," emphasized fast-paced offense and the use of smaller, more athletic players, a strategy that has influenced modern basketball.

Nelson began his coaching career with the Milwaukee Bucks in the 1976-77 season, quickly rising to head coach after just 15 games. He later had successful tenures with the Golden State Warriors and the Dallas Mavericks, where he played a crucial role in drafting future Hall of Famers Dirk Nowitzki and Steve Nash.

His innovative approach was evident during the "Run TMC" era in Golden State, where he fielded a trio of guards—Tim Hardaway, Mitch Richmond, and Chris Mullin—simultaneously, a bold move that was ahead of its time.

Nelson was recognized as NBA Coach of the Year three times and was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2012. He also coached in the NBA All-Star Game and led the "Dream Team II" to a gold medal at the 1994 FIBA World Championships.

After retiring from coaching, Nelson moved to a farm in Maui, Hawaii, where he became an entrepreneur. Following the devastating wildfires in Maui in 2023, he opened his rental properties to families who lost their homes.
