Couple's Detention Sparks Outcry in Chicago Community
Omar David Panqueva, known as DJ TUNJO, and his husband Santiago Paez were detained by federal agents at Chicago's Midway Airport on Sunday as they prepared to board a flight to Washington D.C. for a series of afterparties for the popular Latin pop star Karol G. This incident has drawn significant attention due to its implications for immigration policy and the couple's contributions to the local community.
The couple, founders of the Chicago-based organization La Mesa Presents, which promotes Latin music and cultural events, was reportedly surrounded by federal agents after exiting an Uber at the airport, sparking concern among friends and family. Silvia Paez, Santiago’s sister, took to social media to describe them as “not only partners, but a power team,” emphasizing their bond and community impact.
Following their detention, both individuals were moved to a facility in Indiana. Silvia Paez stated on social media that despite their good spirits, the couple remains separated, significantly impacting their family and friends.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) cited the couple's overstayed visas—originally issued in 2021 but expired in 2022—as the reason for their detention. However, officials have not confirmed whether the couple faces any specific criminal charges or if there are active asylum cases associated with them.
According to their attorney, Enrique Espinoza, Panqueva and Paez filed for asylum within the legally required timeframe after arriving in the United States and have been compliant with all legal protocols, including submitting necessary biometric information to the authorities.
“They have been proactive about their status, and the government previously indicated they were working on the case,” Espinoza told the Chicago Sun-Times. “Their detention feels unjust, especially since they have followed every rule and have no criminal history.” He criticized the government’s actions, suggesting they have unfairly targeted the couple due to their status.
In response to the situation, a GoFundMe campaign has raised over $21,000 for the couple’s legal defense and travel expenses, highlighting community support for Panqueva and Paez. Silvia Paez expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support, noting that it has bolstered the couple’s spirits.
She urged the public to exercise caution when traveling through airports, reflecting a growing sentiment of fear within immigrant communities. “Santiago and David are very aware of how the community has shown up for them. They are overwhelmed by the love coming from you guys,” she noted in her social media communications.
The unsettling nature of their detention has sparked broader conversations in local and national discussions about immigration policies and the treatment of Latino individuals in the U.S. Paez’s sister poignantly remarked, “I wish we lived in a world where being Latino wasn’t a crime.”
As of now, Omar David Panqueva and Santiago Paez remain in detention pending removal hearings, with their attorney continuing to advocate for their release and the protection of their asylum rights.
