Tragic Helicopter Collision During Wildfire Combat Near Athens Kills Two Crew Members

Two Greek firefighting helicopters collided in midair on Sunday while battling a fierce, wind-driven wildfire west of Athens, resulting in the tragic deaths of two crew members. Footage of the incident revealed that one helicopter crashed to the ground, claiming the lives of a Greek and a Danish national onboard.

Meanwhile, two other crew members, a Greek and a British national, were recovered alive. This incident highlights the heightened dangers faced by firefighting teams as Europe grapples with escalating wildfire emergencies, particularly in Greece.

The helicopters, identified as Bell models, were deployed in the Psatha area, and each aircraft was manned by a two-person crew. Greece often attracts foreign firefighting assistance during its sweltering summers, a necessity given the ferocity of fires that threaten both natural and human life.

Fire activity intensified in western Attica, particularly affecting communities and an industrial sector near Megara. The flames expanded rapidly due to strong winds, which complicated firefighting efforts by hampering aircraft from sourcing water from the sea. The current wildfire scenario resonates painfully, recalling the 2018 Mati wildfire that resulted in 104 fatalities, one of the deadliest blazes in recent European history.

Across France, wildfires have also wreaked havoc. The largest wildfire, dubbed the Gironde megafire, remains contained but continues to burn after razing approximately 420 square kilometers (162 square miles). As of now, over 224,000 individuals have been evacuated within France during what amounts to the largest civilian evacuation undertaken outside wartime conditions. Simultaneously, evacuations in Spain and other parts of Europe reflect a growing crisis as wildfires spread.

The alarming trend of increased wildfire activity throughout Europe correlates with climate change, as the continent has warmed significantly. According to the European Environment Agency, nearly 800 wildfire-related deaths have occurred over the past 40 years. This summer, countries are feeling the impact acutely, with unprecedented evacuation measures and firefighting challenges.
