Tragic Coal Mine Explosion in Quetta, Pakistan Claims At Least 32 Lives

A devastating explosion at a coal mine near Quetta, Baluchistan, Pakistan on Thursday resulted in the deaths of at least 32 miners and left 10 others trapped underground, officials confirmed. The blast was reportedly caused by a buildup of methane gas, a prevalent hazard in mining operations.

The explosion occurred on the outskirts of Quetta, prompting immediate rescue operations. Government mine inspector Ghani Baloch stated that the bodies of seven miners were recovered within hours, followed by an additional 25 later in the day. Rescue teams are actively working to locate the remaining trapped individuals, though Baloch cautioned that the situation was dire.

“The chances of finding anyone alive diminish after methane gas explosions because oxygen levels drop to zero,” Baloch explained. He added that rescuers are proceeding with caution amid the ongoing search.

As authorities handed over the recovered bodies to grieving families, the tension among relatives of the missing miners mounted. Shoaib Nosherwani, Baluchistan’s Minister for Mines and Minerals, expressed his condolences, announcing a compensation of 500,000 Pakistani rupees (approximately $1,800) to the families of each deceased miner.

Nosherwani pledged that a thorough investigation would be launched to determine the explosion's cause and to reassess existing mining safety protocols. Labor unions, including the Pakistan Central Mines Labour Federation, have raised concerns over possible negligence and demanded stringent action against those responsible for safety violations.

Deadly incidents in the coal mining sector are not uncommon in Pakistan, notably in Baluchistan, where many mines operate without sufficient ventilation or gas monitoring equipment. Workers and advocacy groups have long criticized mine owners for neglecting safety regulations and failing to equip miners adequately. Despite the perilous conditions and meager wages, many continue to depend on the coal industry for their subsistence in this economically challenged region.

The investigation into the explosion is ongoing, with rescue efforts continuing as officials brace for a potential rise in the death toll.
