At Least 20 Killed in Crackdown on Protests in Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir

At least 20 people have been killed and over 50 injured in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) as security forces responded to protests against upcoming elections. The violence occurred in the Dreik Eighth area of Rawalakot, where Pakistani forces targeted demonstrators advocating for a boycott of the elections. Among the deceased is Usman Nazir, brother of a member of the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC), which is leading the boycott campaign.

Since protests began on June 5, a total of 80 individuals have reportedly lost their lives due to actions by Pakistani forces. Eyewitness accounts and videos from the region depict bodies lying on the streets as security personnel fired on crowds. Aqeel Bhai, a local social media influencer, described the situation as dire, urging international media to support the peaceful protesters.

In response to the unrest, Islamabad has deployed over 14,000 armed personnel to PoK, with snipers positioned at various locations. Reports indicate that security forces have been ordered to use live ammunition against those boycotting the elections. Additionally, internet and mobile services have been suspended, and utilities such as electricity and water have been disrupted in several areas.

The elections for 45 seats in the PoK legislative assembly are scheduled to occur in three phases, concluding on August 10. The first phase took place on July 27, with subsequent polling set for August 2 and August 10 in different divisions.
