Auburn Gresham Basketball Coach Tim Bankston Found Fatally Shot in Home

A well-known basketball coach, Tim Bankston , was found fatally shot in his friend's home in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood of Chicago on Wednesday morning. Police discovered Bankston with a gunshot wound to the stomach around 10 a.m. in the 7600 block of South Emerald Street. The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, with authorities reporting only one shell casing was found at the scene.

Bankston, who served as the varsity basketball coach at Thornton Fractional North High School in Calumet City, was remembered by family and friends as a generous mentor who positively impacted the lives of many students over his decades-long career. His sisters, Karolyn and Jennifer , along with his great-niece, Kailey-Rose , described him as a 'gentle giant' and a person who was always willing to help others.

According to 17th Ward Alderman David Moore , a former classmate of Bankston, the coach did not reside at the home where he was found and lived in Gary, Indiana with his wife and three children. Moore expressed disbelief over the violent nature of the incident, stating, 'I don't know all the facts, but I am betting dollars to donuts it had nothing to do with any illegal type stuff.'

As the investigation continues, Bankston's family is grappling with the shock of his death and the impact it will have on the community. They are currently unable to discuss funeral arrangements. Alderman Moore emphasized the importance of preserving Bankston's legacy of helping young people, stating, 'We have to keep his legacy alive of helping people, especially young people.'
