UVALDE, Texas – A major disaster declaration has been issued for at least 28 counties in South Texas after historic rainfall caused significant flooding, Governor Greg Abbott announced during a news conference in Uvalde. Between July 13 and July 17, areas from Hondo to Camp Wood received between 15 and 27 inches of rain, resulting in extensive damage and the rescue of over 500 individuals by first responders.

Despite the rain subsiding, Abbott warned that rivers, particularly the Nueces River, continue to pose life-threatening risks as water levels are expected to rise for several days. The declaration, which includes Bexar County and other severely affected areas, will be sent to President Donald Trump for federal relief assistance. Two fatalities have been reported due to the flooding, including a 74-year-old man in Uvalde whose vehicle was swept away.
