Chicago Air Quality Alert Extended as Wildfire Smoke Persists
Thick smoke from Canadian wildfires continues to affect air quality in the Chicago area, prompting an air quality alert that remains in effect through Saturday night. As of 2 p.m. Friday, the Air Quality Index was categorized as 'unhealthy,' down from 'hazardous' earlier in the week, according to meteorologist Zachary Yack from the National Weather Service.
While some outdoor venues, including Chicago beaches and pools, began to reopen by mid-afternoon, several attractions such as the Osaka Garden and the Garfield Park Conservatory remained closed. In Evanston, all outdoor activities were paused, and summer camps were relocated indoors. Despite the conditions, the Ravinia Festival proceeded with its scheduled performance after monitoring air quality closely. Health officials have reported an uptick in respiratory complaints, urging vulnerable populations to limit outdoor exposure. The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency anticipates a moderate air quality reading for Saturday, although some smoke may linger.
