The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed that a Mexican national fatally shot by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers in Houston was not the intended target during a vehicle stop. The incident occurred on July 7, when ICE officers, acting on a credible tip, mistakenly identified the victim, Salgado Araujo, as their target.

DHS stated that officers had been conducting surveillance on a different individual and initiated the stop after observing a white van with someone resembling their target. Initial reports indicated that Araujo was shot after allegedly ignoring commands and attempting to ram an officer, but the agency later clarified that he was not the intended subject of their operation.

Araujo, who had lived in the U.S. for over three decades and was reportedly close to obtaining legal status, was driving a crew to a homebuilding site at the time of the shooting. He was struck in the abdomen and later died at the hospital. His family and local officials have called for an independent investigation into the incident.

Three men, including Araujo's brother, were detained during the traffic stop. They reported that an ICE officer fired almost immediately upon exiting his vehicle, contradicting initial claims about Araujo's actions. The officer involved was not wearing a body camera, as the Houston field office had not yet received them due to funding issues.

The Harris County District Attorney's office is conducting an investigation, while Mexican officials have pledged to take action regarding Araujo's case. Local representatives have expressed frustration over the lack of accountability and have called for reforms within ICE.
