Family Sues Clearbrook After Disabled Woman's Fatal Choking Incident
The family of Emily Kasanga, a 34-year-old woman with disabilities, has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Clearbrook, the operator of a group home in Rolling Meadows, Illinois. The lawsuit claims that Kasanga choked to death on April 25, 2026, after being left unattended during a meal, despite a care plan that mandated close supervision due to her diagnosed swallowing disorder.
According to the lawsuit, only one staff member was present at the time of the incident, while two were required. The family alleges that staff failed to notify them of Kasanga's death, which occurred shortly after her 34th birthday. They assert that Clearbrook was aware of her choking risk and did not implement necessary precautions.
Kasanga had lived at the group home for 12 years and had a history of autism and a seizure disorder. Her family previously raised concerns about her care with Clearbrook and filed a complaint with the Illinois Office of the Inspector General, which they claim went unaddressed. The lawsuit follows a performance audit revealing 93 claims against Clearbrook from 2021 to 2023.
Clearbrook, which serves over 8,000 individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities across Illinois, has not yet publicly responded to the lawsuit. The family seeks justice for Kasanga, emphasizing their desire for accountability regarding her care.
