Chicago Man Charged After Shooting Injures Two Police Officers

A 34-year-old man from Chicago has been charged with attempted murder and aggravated battery following a shooting incident that injured two police officers on Friday. Malik Wrightsell, residing on the 4600 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue, faces a total of seven charges, including attempted first-degree murder and multiple weapons offenses.

The incident occurred when police attempted to stop a homemade vehicle in the 2000 block of East 79th Street. During the ensuing chase, gunfire was exchanged, with Wrightsell allegedly shooting one officer in the abdomen, though the bullet struck the officer's ballistic vest. A second officer sustained a gunshot wound to the arm. Both officers, identified as Carl Williams, 27, and Esteban Cervantes, 30, were hospitalized but are expected to recover. Wrightsell was apprehended shortly after the shooting and is currently in critical condition at Northwestern Hospital. A firearm was recovered at the scene, and the investigation is ongoing.
