23-Year-Old Pregnant Woman and Unborn Child Die After Gunfire Hits DeKalb County Home
A 23-year-old pregnant woman and her unborn child have died after a shooting at a DeKalb County residence early Tuesday morning, according to local authorities. The DeKalb County Medical Examiner's Office identified the victim as Shakiya Pridgen .
DeKalb County police officers responded to a report of a person shot in the 3300 block of Peppertree Circle at approximately 5:15 a.m. Upon arrival, officers found Pridgen suffering from multiple gunshot wounds inside the home. She was transported to a local hospital, where both she and her unborn child succumbed to their injuries.
Preliminary findings from investigators indicate that an unidentified shooter fired into the residence from the outside. Police reported that no other injuries occurred during the incident.
The DeKalb County Medical Examiner's Office stated that the official cause and manner of death remain under investigation. Officials noted that autopsy reports can take up to 90 days to complete and are withheld while a case is pending investigation or adjudication. The police investigation remains active, and authorities are urging anyone with information about the shooting to contact investigators.
