Inaugurating Georgia's First High-Capacity Bus Rapid Transit Corridor

ATLANTA, Georgia — In a transformative civil milestone for regional transit equity and urban mobility, the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA), alongside the City of Atlanta and the Federal Transit Administration (FTA), has officially launched revenue service on the landmark MARTA Rapid A-Line. Spanning approximately five miles from Downtown Atlanta through historic southside neighborhoods down to the Atlanta BeltLine, the modern route represents the very first dedicated Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system to operate in the State of Georgia.

Financed through a strategic blend of the voter-approved More MARTA Atlanta sales tax initiative and a competitive $12.6 million federal BUILD grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation, the project provides a fast, reliable transit link across historically underserved communities. The Rapid A-Line connects major rail hubs at Five Points, Georgia State, and Garnett stations directly with Capitol Gateway, Summerhill, and Peoplestown, culminating at the burgeoning Atlanta BeltLine Southside Trail.

Light Rail Amenities with Dedicated Lanes and Transit Signal Priority

Engineered to emulate the speed, reliability, and comfort of modern light rail at a fraction of the capital construction cost, the MARTA Rapid A-Line introduces a host of cutting-edge roadway transit features:

  • Dedicated Bus Lanes: Approximately 85 percent of the corridor features dedicated, bright-red surface bus-only lanes to bypass heavy vehicular congestion.
  • Transit Signal Priority (TSP): Intelligent roadway sensors and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication automatically extend green lights for approaching rapid buses.
  • Off-Board Smart Fare Collection: Turnstiles and Breeze smart-card validators located on platforms allow instant, all-door boarding to eliminate dwell times.
  • Level Boarding Platforms: Raised curbs match the interior floor height of transit vehicles for 100 percent step-free Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accessibility.

The corridor encompasses 14 custom-designed passenger stations equipped with cantilevered architectural canopies, real-time arrival screens, security cameras, emergency help points, and pedestrian lighting designed to enhance community walkability.

Zero-Emission Battery Electric Fleet and Urban Green Corridors

Operations on the Rapid A-Line are anchored by a dedicated fleet of 60-foot articulated zero-emission battery-electric buses manufactured by New Flyer. Powered by high-capacity depot charging infrastructure at MARTA's Brady and Perry garage facilities, each quiet, emissions-free bus prevents metric tonnes of carbon emissions annually while slashing localized nitrogen dioxide pollution along densely populated urban corridors.

Along Hank Aaron Drive and Capitol Avenue, the project delivered extensive streetscape transformations. Contractors rebuilt crumbling sidewalks, planted native drought-tolerant shade trees, installed protected bike lanes, and upgraded century-old municipal stormwater retention basins to mitigate localized flash flooding during severe summer storms.

Catalyst for Southside Housing and Commercial Revitalization

Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens and transit leadership highlighted that the Rapid A-Line serves as an indispensable economic anchor for South Atlanta’s resurgence. By slashing transit travel times between Summerhill and central commercial employers to under 15 minutes, the corridor is accelerating transit-oriented mixed-income housing developments, grocery access, and commercial retail around Center Parc Stadium and Georgia State University’s expanding campus.

Civic leaders affirmed that the Summerhill corridor represents the first link in an expansive, multi-corridor MARTA Rapid network—laying the operational blueprint for upcoming arterial BRT investments along Campbellton Road, Clifton Corridor, and the Northside transit spine ahead of major international sports conventions.
