Funeral Arrangements Set for Chicago Officer Killed in Hospital Shooting

Funeral services for Chicago police officer John Bartholomew, who was fatally shot at Swedish Hospital last Saturday, are scheduled for next week in the Edgewater neighborhood. Visitation will take place from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. on May 7 at St. Andrew’s Greek Orthodox Church, located at 5649 N. Sheridan Rd. The funeral will be held at the same church at 10 a.m. on May 8, according to an obituary published Thursday.

Bartholomew, a 10-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, was killed after being shot by a robbery suspect during a hospital exam. Authorities said the suspect, identified as Alphanso Talley, was uncuffed and given privacy to change into a gown and blanket when he produced a firearm and shot Bartholomew and another officer in the hospital room.

Bartholomew was transported to Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he died shortly after the shooting. The second officer remains hospitalized. Talley has been charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and aggravated kidnapping. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
