Severe Hailstorm in Springfield Kills Zoo Emu, Damages Vehicles and Disrupts Flights
A powerful hailstorm struck Springfield, Missouri on Tuesday, producing hailstones as large as 4.75 inches and causing widespread damage across the city. Emergency management officials described it as the worst hailstorm in Springfield's history, though it did not surpass the state record for hail size.
At the Dickerson Park Zoo, staff attempted to move animals indoors, but a 21-year-old emu named Adam died from head trauma caused by the hail. A 17-year-old rhea named Oscar was also injured but was reported to be recovering with pain medication as of Wednesday morning. The zoo remained closed following the incident.
The Springfield-Branson National Airport, located about five miles northwest of downtown, reported significant damage. Dozens of flights were delayed or canceled, and hundreds of vehicles sustained broken windshields or sunroofs, according to airport officials. Some passengers were transported approximately 100 miles to Bentonville, Arkansas, due to damage to rental cars. Airport staff spent several hours covering damaged vehicles with tarps.
Local emergency management officials said the majority of injuries reported were related to hail breaking vehicle windshields, though exact numbers were not available. Power outages affected thousands, and property damage was reported throughout the area, including to homes and businesses. Assessments and recovery efforts were ongoing as of Wednesday.
