Attorney's Tip Leads Police to Homicide Victim in Greater Grand Crossing Apartment

Chicago police are questioning a man after receiving a call from his attorney alerting them to the homicide of a woman in a Greater Grand Crossing apartment Monday night. The incident took place at an apartment located at 524 E. 72nd St., where first responders entered the residence and discovered the victim shortly after 8:40 p.m.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office identified the deceased as 29-year-old Terriyanna Johnson. A Tuesday autopsy confirmed she died from strangulation, and her death has been officially ruled a homicide.

According to police accounts, the investigation began when a criminal defense lawyer contacted authorities to report the presence of a deceased individual at the address and shared that his client wished to turn himself in. Officers forced entry into the apartment, where they found Johnson’s body on the bedroom floor, covered with a blanket. Officials noted a small amount of blood near her head and observed a bruise on her upper left arm.

Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:01 p.m. on Monday. Police have yet to file any charges as of Wednesday morning, but confirmed they are interviewing a person of interest related to the case.

Area 1 detectives continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the killing. No further details about the individual in custody or possible motives have been released as the investigation remains ongoing.
