Maryland Mother Seeks Police Help as Son Falls Victim to Online Romance Scam

A woman in Maryland has turned to local authorities for assistance after her 41-year-old son, a recovering drug addict, became convinced he is in an online relationship with a much younger celebrity and has been sending her money regularly despite advice from family.

The mother, who lives with her son and serves as his primary support, expressed concern that he is being scammed. According to her account, her son, who works part time at a grocery store and lacks financial resources, believes he is communicating with a 23-year-old famous actress online. He has been sending her weekly payments by purchasing and transferring gift cards.

The worried mother stated that she has tried repeatedly to persuade her son that the relationship is not legitimate, but he remains convinced of its authenticity. Without the financial or emotional means to ask him to leave her home, she turned to local police, hoping they could intervene and help her son recognize the scam.

Experts note gift card payments are a red flag often associated with online fraud, particularly schemes exploiting emotional or romantic connections. Scammers posing as celebrities or love interests frequently target vulnerable individuals who may be more trusting or isolated, a trend that has prompted warnings from consumer advocates and law enforcement agencies nationwide.

The current status of the case is that the mother has been advised to seek direct help from law enforcement to confront the issue. The hope is that intervention from authorities will stop further financial loss and help the son recognize the situation as fraudulent. Police have not released further information as of this time.
