Kansas City Chiefs Add Justin Fields as Quarterback Insurance Amid Patrick Mahomes Recovery

The Kansas City Chiefs have brought in quarterback Justin Fields this offseason, acquiring him in a trade from the New York Jets as star quarterback Patrick Mahomes continues his rehabilitation from knee surgery. Fields, 27, is preparing to step into whichever role is needed as the Chiefs organize for the upcoming NFL season.

Fields arrived in Kansas City following a series of moves that saw him traded from the Chicago Bears to the Pittsburgh Steelers after the 2023 season, then signing with the Jets as a free agent. His tenure with New York was brief, and after the Jets traded for Geno Smith, Fields' future with the team came to an end. The Chiefs secured Fields by sending a sixth-round draft pick to the Jets and agreed to pay $7 million of his $10 million salary for the next season.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Fields expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity, highlighting the Chiefs’ organizational culture and track record of success. Head coach Andy Reid emphasized that Fields was not acquired merely as a utility or gadget player but as a legitimate quarterback with starting experience. Last season, Fields compiled a 2-7 record as a starter for the Jets, passing for 1,259 yards, seven touchdowns, and one interception.

The Chiefs’ need for an experienced backup became more pressing after the previous season, when Gardner Minshew, the team's former backup, struggled in that role. With Mahomes still recovering, the organization wanted reliable insurance at quarterback should their franchise player not be ready for the start of the regular season.

Mahomes, meanwhile, remains active in his rehabilitation process, attending team meetings and participating in strength and conditioning activities. Although he has publicly stated his intent to return by Week 1, head coach Reid noted the team will continue to monitor his recovery to ensure a smart approach to his return.

Currently, Fields is participating in offseason activities with the Chiefs as Mahomes continues his rehab efforts. The team expects more clarity on their starting quarterback situation as training camp approaches.
