White Sox Snap Scoring Drought With 6-5 Victory Over Royals in Kansas City
The Chicago White Sox ended a 21-inning scoreless stretch on Sunday in Kansas City, Missouri, hitting their first home runs in a week to secure a 6-5 win over the Kansas City Royals. The win capped a four-game series split between the American League Central division rivals at Kauffman Stadium.
Following a three-hour rain delay, White Sox rookie Tanner Murray launched his first career home run in the second inning, a two-run shot that put Chicago on the board after being shut out in the previous two games. Colson Montgomery, who scored on Murray's homer after doubling off Royals starter Noah Cameron, later added a two-run home run of his own.
The White Sox pitching staff took an all-hands-on-deck approach. Grant Taylor opened with two flawless innings before Sean Newcomb took over in the third. Jonathan Cannon, called up from Triple-A Charlotte, struggled after inheriting baserunners, delivering a wild pitch and issuing three walks before exiting with hip irritation. Manager Will Venable used several relievers as the lead changed hands four times through the game.
Dustin Harris delivered a pivotal pinch-hit double in the seventh for Chicago and later scored on a wild pitch by Royals reliever John Schreiber, giving the Sox the go-ahead run. Harris also made a crucial defensive play in the eighth, preventing at least extra bases for Michael Massey with an acrobatic catch.
Colson Montgomery took a 95-mph pitch off his forearm in the eighth inning but remained in the game, later describing his wrist as "sore but not broke." Manager Will Venable praised the team's resilience amid the challenging game conditions, stating, "In those types of situations, you need the guys to step up and pitch well, and they did."
Elsewhere, former White Sox player Eloy Jimenez made his first Major League appearance of the season with the Toronto Blue Jays, recording two hits as designated hitter. Luis Robert Jr., now with the New York Mets, has started his season with a strong performance, while other former Sox prospects are adjusting to their new clubs.
The White Sox return home to face the Los Angeles Angels from April 27 to 29, followed by road and home games against Toronto and the Mets later this summer.
The current status sees Montgomery remaining active despite his injury scare and the White Sox stabilizing their offense after a challenging series. Jonathan Cannon's injury will be monitored as the team continues its rotation adjustments.
