Cubs Manager Criticizes MLB Rule Allowing Dodgers Extra Pitcher Due to Ohtani's Status

Chicago, Illinois, United states of america — Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell on Monday voiced strong objections to a Major League Baseball rule that allows the Los Angeles Dodgers to carry an additional pitcher on their roster thanks to Shohei Ohtani’s designation as a two-way player.

According to MLB regulations, teams may carry a maximum of 13 pitchers for most of the season. However, because Ohtani qualifies as both a batter and a pitcher, the Dodgers are not required to count him against their pitcher limit, effectively giving them a 14th pitcher. Counsell called the arrangement “bizarre” during his remarks before the Cubs’ game against the Philadelphia Phillies, noting the advantage it grants specifically to the Dodgers.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, responding to the criticism, acknowledged that the rule benefits Los Angeles, but pointed out that Ohtani’s rare skills justify the exception. "He’s an exception because he’s an exceptional player. It is what it is," Roberts was quoted as saying.

In other team developments, Counsell’s position in Chicago sports gained attention after Billy Donovan left the Chicago Bulls, making Counsell the current longest-tenured head coach among Chicago’s major professional teams. Counsell is now in his third season with the Cubs after being hired in November 2023.

On the player development front, pitching prospect Mason McGwire—son of longtime MLB slugger Mark McGwire—has impressed in the Cubs’ minor-league system. The 22-year-old right-hander allowed just one hit and struck out five over four scoreless innings in a recent appearance for Myrtle Beach, maintaining a 0.90 ERA so far this season.

Injury news included reliever Porter Hodge undergoing right elbow surgery to repair his ulnar collateral ligament using an internal brace method pioneered by Dr. Keith Meister. Meanwhile, closer Daniel Palencia remains sidelined following an MRI that confirmed a strained left lat muscle, but the team hopes he may resume throwing soon.

The Cubs are currently riding a six-game winning streak, matching their longest run from the previous season. The team continues its homestand at Wrigley Field as the roster adjusts to injuries and key prospects make progress in rehabilitation and development.
