Skydiver Collides with Lane Stadium Scoreboard Before Virginia Tech Spring Game

A skydiver was rescued after crashing into the scoreboard at Lane Stadium in Blacksburg, Virginia just before the start of the Virginia Tech spring football game on Saturday, April 18, 2026.

According to university officials, the skydiver was participating in a pre-game event when high winds caused him to veer off course and collide with the stadium’s jumbotron. Video footage showed the parachute coming to rest between the letters "C" and "H" atop the scoreboard before first responders moved in to assist.

The incident temporarily delayed the kickoff of the annual spring scrimmage. Virginia Tech representatives stated on social media that the skydiver was “safely secured and is currently stable” following swift rescue operations. No injuries were reported.

Authorities did not release the name of the skydiver. In an official statement, the university acknowledged the work of first responders, event staff, and medical personnel, crediting their quick and coordinated intervention with the positive outcome. “Our primary focus remains on their well-being,” the statement added.

The university expressed gratitude toward Blacksburg and Virginia Tech emergency crews for safely resolving the situation. No further details on the circumstances leading up to the crash have been made available, and officials are continuing to monitor the skydiver’s condition. The annual spring game resumed after the brief interruption, with no further issues reported.
