Davis Martin Emerges as Key Starter Amid White Sox Rotation Shakeup
Davis Martin is making a strong case for the front spot in the Chicago White Sox pitching rotation, as the team prepares to face the Oakland Athletics on Friday. With Opening Day starter Shane Smith currently working to regain form in the minor leagues, Martin has stepped up, delivering promising performances early in the season.
Through his first 18 innings this year, Martin has recorded a 2.50 ERA with 15 strikeouts and just four walks. In his most recent outing, Martin limited the Kansas City Royals to two runs over seven innings, though he received no run support from the Sox lineup in a 2-0 loss.
Martin, a 14th-round pick in 2018, credited a simplified approach for his improvement, focusing on what he can control on the mound. He reflected on advice from former teammate Martin Perez, emphasizing reading hitters directly rather than relying exclusively on scouting reports. This hands-on strategy appears to be paying dividends in Martin’s second full season in the majors.
Meanwhile, the White Sox continue to struggle offensively and overall, holding a league-worst 6-13 record after dropping eight of their last nine games and six consecutive home contests. The club is now embarking on a challenging road trip against the Athletics and Diamondbacks, both teams above .500 this season.
The Sox may soon get reinforcement as catcher Kyle Teel is nearing a rehab assignment following a hamstring injury sustained during the World Baseball Classic. Teel, who produced a .786 OPS last year, has begun full workouts and hopes to join Triple-A Charlotte within the week if all strength and sprint metrics are met.
On the pitching side, the White Sox have mixed traditional starts with unconventional 'opener' appearances, deploying Jordan Leasure and Grant Taylor in short-start outings. However, no openers are planned for the upcoming series in Sacramento.
The team continues to adjust its roster and rotation, seeking stability as the season unfolds. Martin’s emergence is a rare bright spot as Chicago looks for answers both on the mound and at the plate. The White Sox will reassess as injured players near return and young pitchers like Martin expand their roles.
