Meet Ellie the Elephant: The Iconic Mascot Captivating Fans at New York Liberty Games

When the New York Liberty made their thrilling pre-game entrance beneath the dazzling Barclays Center for their WNBA semi-final series against the Las Vegas Aces last month, the energy in the arena rivaled that of any high-profile New York Fashion Week event. Star point guard Sabrina Ionescu showcased understated elegance in a sage turtleneck and camel-colored blazer, while Breanna Stewart, a two-time WNBA Most Valuable Player, donned black sunglasses paired with a stylish baseball hat, exuding an effortless cool. However, it was Ellie the Elephant, the Liberty's mascot, who truly commanded the spotlight, dazzling the crowd in a striking zebra-print coat and captivating fans with her flamboyant dance moves and playful personality.

Ellie is no ordinary mascot; she is a charismatic performer whose infectious energy has made her a beloved figure in Brooklyn and beyond. Unlike traditional mascots that simply entertain during halftime, Ellie is a dynamic dancing sensation. She has wowed audiences with her impressive splits, handstands, and signature moves, becoming a symbol of the Liberty's resurgence as they chase their first championship in over half a century. This season, Ellie has become an essential part of the Liberty's journey, inspiring countless fans and embodying the spirit of a team that has captured the hearts of many.

“Ellie is iconic,” said Claire Abelson, a devoted Liberty supporter and teacher. “She exemplifies Brooklyn and Black excellence.” Even those who were not avid basketball fans have been drawn into the excitement of the games, like Martha Nadell, an English professor who now holds season tickets. She relishes watching Ellie engage the crowd with her playful antics and high-energy dance moves. “How can you not love a twerking elephant?” Nadell remarked, reflecting the joy Ellie brings to the arena.

Ellie's influence extends beyond the basketball court. She has been name-checked by celebrities like Cardi B and has made appearances at events with Childish Gambino and Lil’ Kim. On social media, she boasts over 300,000 followers, where her adventures include everything from showcasing her latest fashion statements to promoting self-care, such as her LED light therapy facial, in collaboration with brand partner Glowbar. Sporting a Liberty uniform with the number 00, Ellie is often seen in a dazzling array of outfits, including silver miniskirts and extravagant hairstyles, complemented by her signature Statue of Liberty-inspired tiara and eye-catching accessories.

At just four years old, Ellie owes her creation to Shana Stephenson, the Liberty's chief brand officer, who envisioned a vibrant mascot when the team relocated from Madison Square Garden to the Barclays Center. After the retirement of Maddie, the previous golden retriever mascot, Stephenson sought the help of a talented team of artists to bring the idea of an elephant mascot to life—an homage to P.T. Barnum’s famous elephant parade across the Brooklyn Bridge in 1884. Together with Criscia Long, the senior director of entertainment, Stephenson assembled an all-Black creative team dedicated to crafting a mascot that would resonate with fans and embody the culture of Brooklyn.

“It was essential that Ellie represent Brooklyn while also being distinctly feminine,” Stephenson explained. “We wanted her to be entertaining and fashionable, embodying the essence of what a New York Liberty mascot could be.” The process included auditions for local performers who could interpret Ellie’s character, ensuring she was anything but a cookie-cutter mascot.

Unlike some mascots that may come off as clumsy or silly, Ellie is designed to be sassy, stylish, and multi-faceted. Stephenson describes her as a fashionista, athlete, and dancer all in one. “Ellie is full of attitude and charm,” she said. “She truly embodies what it means to be a modern woman.”

Despite her popularity, the true identity of the performer behind Ellie remains a closely guarded secret. Team officials maintain that the players are unaware of who portrays the beloved mascot, although they confirm it is always the same person. This dedicated performer collaborates on every aspect of Ellie’s persona, ensuring that her character is authentic and engaging. “Ellie has input on how she shows up,” said Stephenson. “She’s not just directed on what to wear or how to perform; she actively contributes to the vision of the character.”

Ellie’s connection with fans of all ages is a vital part of her appeal. “Whether you’re a little girl or a 45-year-old woman, Ellie is able to connect with you,” Stephenson noted. “Our players are incredibly approachable, and that uniqueness extends to Ellie as well, who brings a sense of humor to the games.”

As the New York Liberty continue their journey toward the WNBA finals, Ellie the Elephant stands at the forefront, representing not just a basketball team but a movement that celebrates community, culture, and empowerment. With her vibrant personality and infectious spirit, Ellie has become more than just a mascot; she is a cultural icon and a beloved figure in the world of sports entertainment.
