White Sox Adjust Rotation Amid Shane Smith’s Triple-A Assignment and Noah Schultz’s Emergence

The Chicago White Sox have made several significant changes to their pitching staff following a strong two-week performance from their starting rotation, highlighted by a major league-best 1.73 ERA over 11 games from April 3 to 14.

Despite that collective success, right-hander Shane Smith, the club’s Opening Day starter, has been sent to Triple-A Charlotte after a challenging start to the season. According to general manager Chris Getz, Smith struggled to rely on his four-seam fastball and curveball, leading to three starts in which he allowed 12 runs across just 8⅓ innings. Getz stated that the organization wanted to give Smith time to reset away from major league pressures. In his first outing with the Charlotte Knights over the weekend, Smith pitched four innings, surrendering three runs on four hits, issuing one walk, and striking out five batters.

Meanwhile, the White Sox have committed to including rookie left-hander Noah Schultz in the major league starting rotation following his debut on Tuesday. Schultz, who consistently recorded 98 mph fastballs during his first outing, struck out four over 4⅓ innings against the Tampa Bay Rays. Despite giving up four runs and battling first-inning nerves, both manager Will Venable and teammates expressed confidence in Schultz’s potential and growth. Teammates credited Schultz’s competitive spirit, shaped during his upbringing in Aurora, Illinois.

In addition to moves on the mound, the team has made changes to its active roster. Prospective infielder Sam Antonacci was promoted, with veteran reliever Tyler Gilbert recalled to the bullpen. Outfielder Dustin Harris, who contributed to a win in Kansas City and posted three hits in six games, was designated for assignment; the organization intends to send him to Charlotte if he clears waivers. Pitcher Brandon Eisert was also optioned to Triple-A.

Ahead of Wednesday’s home game, a medical incident involving Gerald Chaney, a longtime anthem singer at the ballpark, briefly overshadowed pregame festivities. Chaney collapsed during his performance but was reported alert as paramedics provided care on the field. He was transported to a local hospital for evaluation, according to team officials.

The White Sox will continue monitoring their evolving rotation as Smith works to regain his form in Triple-A and Schultz seeks to secure his place among the starting five. No timeline has been given for Smith’s potential return, and the team confirmed that roster adjustments may continue in response to on-field performance and player development needs.
