West Suburban Medical Center Gradually Restarts Outpatient Clinics Following Temporary Closure
West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park, Illinois began a phased reopening of its outpatient clinics and testing services on Wednesday, after a recent shutdown caused by unresolved payroll and billing issues. The hospital’s main campus had halted operations late last month when employees went unpaid due to a failure in its electronic records system, preventing proper billing for medical services.
Hospital owner Dr. Manoj Prasad announced that primary care clinics are being reactivated first, with additional specialist offices expected to reopen soon. General surgery services are slated to resume next week, while emergency room and inpatient care remain unavailable. The reopening applies only to the Oak Park facility for now.
Prasad explained that renewed outpatient operations became feasible after the hospital took steps to address roughly 120,000 delayed billing claims, restoring critical revenue. Staff are being gradually brought back to work, although the precise number of returning employees is still being determined. Hospital officials are directly reaching out to existing patients to reschedule appointments by phone and email.
This resumption of care follows legal action this week between Prasad and his business partner, who had issued eviction notices over $25 million in unpaid rent for the hospital properties owned by Resilience Healthcare, the parent company of West Suburban.
The cautious reopening has drawn attention from community leaders, including state Representative La Shawn Ford, who emphasized the need for thorough oversight and state involvement in the process. Ford stressed that “patient safety is paramount” and called for collaboration with agencies such as the Illinois Department of Public Health to ensure full compliance with regulatory standards before services expand further.
As of now, hospital officials state that outpatient services are available only at West Suburban’s Oak Park campus, with additional clinics set to resume as operations stabilize. The emergency department and inpatient beds remain closed, and oversight from state authorities has been requested to monitor reopening plans and patient protections.
