Noah Schultz Debuts for White Sox, Overcomes Nerves in Loss to Rays

Noah Schultz, the top pitching prospect for the Chicago White Sox, made his major league debut on Tuesday night at Guaranteed Rate Field, just 45 miles from his hometown in Aurora, Illinois. The 22-year-old left-hander faced challenges in his first professional outing, allowing early runs before settling down as the game progressed.

Schultz began the game in front of 14,648 fans, including a large group of family, friends, and supporters from his alma mater, Oswego East High School. Despite a promising start with a 98 mph fastball to Yandy Diaz, Schultz struggled with command in the opening inning. He issued two walks, allowed a hit, committed a throwing error on a bunt attempt that led to two runs, and exited the first inning trailing 3-0.

After a difficult opening frame, Schultz recovered to record his first major league strikeout and delivered a three-up, three-down second inning. He continued to show flashes of his talent, totaling four strikeouts over 4 1/3 innings pitched. Schultz surrendered a total of four runs (three earned) on three hits and four walks, leaving the game with the White Sox behind 4-3. He threw 82 pitches, 51 for strikes, and finished with a 6.23 earned run average for his debut.

Offensively, Everson Pereira provided support with a three-run home run, while Munetaka Mura-kami added a two-run homer in the ninth, but the White Sox ultimately fell 8-5 to the Tampa Bay Rays. The Sox’ bullpen faltered later in the game, allowing additional runs that put the contest out of reach.

Before the game, White Sox general manager Chris Getz described Schultz’s call-up as a significant moment for the team’s rebuilding efforts, acknowledging that a smooth transition to the major leagues is rare for young pitchers. Manager Will Venable noted that Schultz settled down after a shaky first inning, crediting the pitcher’s composure.

Schultz’s debut, one of the most anticipated since Michael Kopech in 2018, marks a key milestone in Chicago’s youth movement. The White Sox are expected to monitor his innings closely as the season continues.
