Chicago Woman Fatally Shot During 25th Birthday Celebration in Auburn Gresham
Kayla Winfrey, a 25-year-old resident of Chicago’s Auburn Gresham neighborhood, was fatally shot late Saturday night during her own birthday party at her home on South Morgan Street, according to local police and family accounts.
The incident occurred around 11:45 p.m., when an altercation broke out between two groups of women at the gathering, which drew around 30 to 40 guests, most of whom were friends and relatives. Police reports indicate that the dispute moved to the front porch, where a woman reportedly called for an alleged shooter to come to the scene. Upon arrival in a silver or gray vehicle, the man opened fire, striking Winfrey and a 36-year-old man from Matteson.
Winfrey was pronounced dead less than an hour later from a gunshot wound to the chest. The male victim’s condition was not specified. Authorities said the suspected shooter, identified as a 26-year-old from the Washington Heights area, fled the scene in the same car. No arrests have been made as of Tuesday afternoon, and the investigation is ongoing.
Winfrey’s mother, Equanda Summerville, remembered her daughter as a dedicated youth mentor with Chicago’s SGA Youth and Family Services and as someone known for her generosity and strength, particularly after recovering from a serious car accident in 2023. Friends and family gathered outside the victim’s home on Tuesday, sharing memories of Winfrey’s kindness, humor, and the positive role she played in their lives.
Loved ones are calling for justice in the case and highlighting the enduring pain her death has caused. Police have not released further details on the motive behind the shooting or the current status of the investigation.
