Mayor Zohran Mamdani Charts New Initiatives at 100-Day Milestone in New York City
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani marked 100 days in office on Sunday with a rally highlighting his administration’s early achievements and previewing new policy initiatives aimed at New York’s working class.
Speaking to supporters during an event in the city, Mamdani reflected on promises made at the outset of his term, emphasizing his goal “to make this city belong to more of its people than it did the day before.” Since taking office in January, the 34-year-old Democrat has focused his administration on affordability and quality-of-life improvements for city residents.
Chief among his newly announced plans is a multi-year project to establish city-run grocery stores in all five boroughs. According to Mamdani, the first location is slated to open next year, with additional branches expected to follow over the course of his current four-year term. “At our stores, eggs will be cheaper. Bread will be cheaper. Grocery shopping will no longer be an unsolvable equation,” Mamdani said, positioning the initiative as a direct response to rising food costs.
Mamdani also pledged to expand New York City’s covered trash bin program, replacing traditional black bags with bins throughout the city by 2031. The program aims to modernize waste collection and improve street cleanliness in neighborhoods across all boroughs.
Another focal point of the mayor’s agenda is public transit. At the rally, Mamdani reiterated his campaign pledge to make buses faster and free, announcing efforts to accelerate service along select routes. While the timeline and funding for eliminating bus fares remain to be determined, Mamdani referenced ongoing discussions with state officials in Albany as part of the next steps.
Additional perspectives at the event included remarks from a city transportation official, a tenant organizer who commended the administration’s attention to renter protections, and a parent advocating for expanded child care—a cause Mamdani has championed.
As the mayor’s initiatives take shape, stakeholders in city government and the broader community will be watching for implementation details and legislative collaboration. At this stage, Mamdani continues to articulate his vision while seeking support for his stated priorities.
