White Sox to Debut Top Prospect Noah Schultz Against Rays
The Chicago White Sox announced Sunday that top pitching prospect Noah Schultz will make his Major League Baseball debut at home on Tuesday against the Tampa Bay Rays. Schultz, a left-hander and Oswego East High School alumnus, has been widely anticipated as a centerpiece of the White Sox’s organizational rebuild.
Schultz, 22, was selected in the first round of the 2022 MLB Draft and is ranked as the team's No. 2 prospect, as well as No. 46 overall in baseball according to MLB Pipeline. Standing 6-foot-10, he joins a short list of the tallest pitchers in MLB history. His promotion marks a critical milestone in general manager Chris Getz’s ongoing effort to rejuvenate the White Sox roster through young talent.
During his brief stint with Triple-A Charlotte this season, Schultz posted a 3-0 record with a 1.29 ERA, allowing just four hits over 14 innings while striking out 19 and walking two. Last year, his progress was hampered by knee tendinitis, but both team officials and manager Will Venable have expressed confidence in Schultz’s recovery and current readiness. "He does have an edge when he goes out there and pitches, which you love to see," Venable said.
The White Sox are also weighing a call-up for utility prospect Sam Antonacci, who impressed with Team Italy at the World Baseball Classic and has excelled early this season in Charlotte. However, a final decision on Antonacci’s promotion has not yet been made, according to team sources.
The organization’s timing for these promotions ensures an additional year of team control over its rookies under league roster rules. Both Schultz and Antonacci have been cited as part of a steady influx of prospects expected to arrive on Chicago’s South Side over the course of the season, alongside names such as Tanner McDougal and Hagen Smith.
Schultz is scheduled to take the mound Tuesday at Guaranteed Rate Field, as the White Sox look to the highly-touted prospect to inject new energy into the pitching staff. Antonacci’s status remains under review ahead of the upcoming homestand.
